Shelters Offer Safety for Abuse Victims
MCALLEN - Woman who seek refuge from abusive relationship often turn to shelters like Mujeres Unidas.
It's a system designed to comfort and protect victims. A Mujeres Unidas staff member took CHANNEL 5 NEWS through the steps to check in to the shelter.
When a woman walks in the first person they see is the receptionist. They can ask for information on domestic violence or sexual assault. The receptionist will ask a couple of questions and then escorts the victim inside. Staff members say they try not to discuss sensitive information in the lobby area.
Once inside the office, the client will come to another counter. She is handed an intake form in either English or Spanish. It is a couple of pages long and ask for general information.
Once the form is complete they meet with a counselor. The counselor will ask them why they are coming in and if they need a shelter immediately. They take down the woman's date of birth and how many kids they have. A staff member will call shelters to see if there's room available. If there is room available a counselor will personally escort the client to the shelter.
Mujeres Unidas also offers advice on legal matters, such as getting a protective order and finding an attorney. If you or someone you know needs help you can contact Mujeres Unidas at 630-4878.
